TeamCindy Alcatraz Chair of Research

TeamCindy honors the life of Cynthia “Cindy” Sherwin and was founded by her mother Elaine Schaller to promote brain aneurysm awareness.  In 2007, at only 33 years of age, Cindy died of a ruptured aneurysm while training for the Lake Placid Ironman race.  Cindy was a gifted athlete, as well as a professional trainer and nutritionist.

For one weekend each June 2,000 intrepid amateur and professional triathletes arrive in San Francisco for one of the most infamous and extreme triathlons, the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Since 2013, TeamCindy has entered a growing number of fundraising athletes into the race, in Cindy’s honor and to raise money for the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.

The “Escape” features a 1.5 mile swim through frigid waters from Alcatraz Island to shore, a grueling and hilly 18-mile bike race, and an 8-mile run through the rugged trails of Golden Gate Recreation Area.

The 2019 team of 15 athletes raised over $50,000 for the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
