Stella’s Story

It seems like yesterday, but over two years ago I suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. I am a 42 year old woman. That day I had gone to work when all of a sudden, I had a very bad headache, the worst headache of my life. I started to vomit and became unconscious. My co-workers called 911 immediately. They responded very quickly and I was transported to my local Emergency Department where they quickly determined I needed to be airlifted to a major teaching hospital.

My family came quickly and they were told to expect the worse, that I would most likely suffer major neurological deficits or even death. The odds were not good.

I had a ruptured brain aneurysm that they were able to coil. Unfortunately, I had another unruptured aneurysm they were unable to treat at that time. After 2 weeks in the hospital, I was able to return home to begin my recuperation process. At first, I was so tired and still had headaches. Each day was a little better than the day before. Soon, I was able to return to most of my old activities and get back to work on a part-time basis.

I have returned to the neuroradiologist a couple of times to have an angiogram, checking the status of the coiling that was performed and to take a look at the other unruptured aneurysm. So far, so good.

I am so lucky to be alive and doing so well. I have minimal short term memory issues and sometimes I still get headaches.

Having a brain aneurysm is a very scary thing. I am so grateful to still be here and enjoy each and every day! I am a survivor! I could not have made it this far if it was not for the support of my friends and family. Their support, love and encouragement have opened my eyes even further to appreciate this beautiful gift of life.
