The Delaware Brain Aneurysm Support Group is part of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), which was formed in 2007. The BAF is a non-profit public charity whose mission is to promote early detection of brain aneurysms by providing knowledge and raising awareness of the signs, sysmptoms and risk factors. Work with the medical communities to provide support networks for patients and families, as well as to further research that will improve patient outcomes and save lives.
The Delaware Brain Aneurysm Support Group was formally started in 2010 to address the need for lifelong support to patients and their families. The focus of the Delaware chapter is to help provide framework to support the ongoing recovery process beyond the medical issues and serve as a home for survivors and family members.
The meetings generally alternate between two formats:
1. A brief presentation by a speaker of special interest to the group, followed by open discussion.
2. A meeting devoted to open discussion and free interaction of the attendees.
The sessions are run by the survivors and their families, however, are attended by a behavioral health facilitator and medical providers.
Our brain aneurysm patients and their family and friends (age 18 and older) are invited to participate in monthly meetings. Please be aware that these meetings are not held to offer medical advice, but to provide peer support and education.
The support group meetings are held on a monthly basis (usually 3rd Wed of every month) at Christiana Care Hospital.
Over the last 2 years we have found that sharing between patients in different stages of recovery has been very therapeutic and the format allows for reassurance and personal exchange, but also specific information and education pertaining to brain aneurysms and recovery.
