Stroke and COVID-19 – racing to find connections and manage risks

The link between COVID-19 and stroke is now an important research area at Montefiore-Einstein’s Center for Comprehensive Stroke Care and other institutions around the country. Looking at inpatient data gathered during the first six weeks of the pandemic, we documented more than 60 strokes among roughly 5,000 COVID-19 patients at Montefiore-Einstein. Though not a large percentage, it quickly became clear that COVID-19 patients who have a stroke are about five times more likely to die. Stroke patients also exhibit some unusual symptoms when COVID-19 is present, and some features of these strokes are not typical.
