Dealing with Financial Issues

Rehabilitation therapies can be costly. If families are experiencing financial challenges, they may want to consider a discussion with the patient’s treatment team about less expensive alternatives. For example, it may be that patients can assume some therapy at home with the help of a family member, so that clinic visits can be reduced.

Social Security benefits are often available to individuals who cannot work due to a medical condition that is expected to last at least one year. If your care team recommends doing so apply for Social Security disability as soon as possible following treatment.

In addition, the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act allows state to create tax-advantaged savings programs for eligible people with disabilities.

Families may want to also consider the following measures:

  • Identify all available financial resources, including Social Security benefits, employer benefits, insurance and personal assets.
  • Carefully review all of your family’s medical health plan options and coverages, including eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid and employer sponsored plans.
  • Choose a guardian, a trustee and successors to oversee your loved one’s care and resources when you are no longer able to.
